Pay Fines by Credit Card

Clearing overdue charges and lost item fees from your library account just got easier.

BCCLS libraries now accept credit cards for payment of fees and fines.  The payment is done online through a secure, encrypted service called SmartPay.  You can make your payments from home, in the library, or from any internet-connected device anywhere.

If you have an overdue charge, lost item fee, or other charge on your library account, a button saying “Pay Fines Now” will appear on the screen when you log into your library account through the library catalog

If you have overdue items that are still checked out, the fine for those items cannot be paid online until the items are returned or until the items are declared lost.  Then the actual amount owed will appear and be eligible for payment.

Each library account is individual, even for members of the same household, and they cannot be combined.  If there are multiple fines on multiple accounts, each account must be handled as a separate transaction for online credit card payment.

The payment will appear on your credit card statement as BERGEN COUNTY COOPERATIVE LIBRARY SYSTEM (the full name of BCCLS).  This is okay, it is how the system is set up.

Please note:  For compliance reasons, no staff members in any BCCLS libraries are allowed to physically accept your credit card or enter your credit card number on your behalf.  You must complete the payment transaction yourself through the secure SmartPay website.  If you are already in the library, you must still use one of our catalog kiosks or internet workstations to log into your account and make your own payment.  Payments cannot be made at any staff workstation, but a staff member may assist you at one of our public computers.  If you would like assistance, just ask!

Cash and checks are still accepted for in-person payments.  The MFPL also has an ATM in the lobby.

A 50 cent fee is added to each transaction.  Transactions are non-reversible.
