1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1,000 Books before Kindergarten

The Challenge

Millburn Library is proud to join 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, a national program designed to promote reading among newborns, infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Any child who lives in Millburn and who has a parent or guardian who has a Millburn Library card is welcome to join!

The goal is just that, to read 1,000 books with your child before they start kindergarten. If you read just 1 book a day together, you can finish in just under 3 years (3 years = 1,095 books); if you read 3 books a day, you can finish in under a year!

How to Participate

Register your child by filling out the form below. Then, just start reading! Any and all books your child reads will count— whether they read with a parent, or listen to story-time at the library. You can even read your favorites multiple times.

A paper tracker will be provided— just mark off each book with a simple to track your child’s progress. There are no required readings (though you can check out suggested booklists below), and the program is entirely self-paced. You can download the paper tracker here or pick one up at the Children’s Desk.

Milestones & Prizes

Reading 100 books is a pretty big accomplishment, and you can visit the Children’s Desk at the library to grab a milestone ‘brag tag’ to celebrate! Milestones are every 100 books (100, 200 … 900, 1,000!).

Once you have completed 1,000 books, you will receive a certificate of completion, plus a free prize book to keep!
