OPEN POSITIONLibrary Assistant – Circulation (Part-Time) – TWO POSITIONS

  • Position # 1:               Part-time, 4 hours per week (Sundays)
  • Position # 2:               Part-time, 18 hours per week (Sun, Mon & Tues)

The Millburn Free Public Library invites applications to fill two part-time library assistant positions in our busy Public Services Department.  Includes pro-rated leave time benefits.  Reports to the Head of Public Services.

Duties include:

  • Circulation desk service to visitors of all ages (greet, check-in, check-out, registration, etc.).
  • Process holds, inter-library loans, and transfers.
  • Answer phones and forward calls to appropriate recipients as needed.
  • Assist patrons with general directional questions within the library.
  • Perform filing or shelving following the Dewey Decimal System. Check shelves to ensure materials are filed properly.  Locate material based on call number.  Perform searches for material not in its proper location.
  • Prepare library materials for circulation/use.
  • Assist patrons with public photocopiers and public fax, as needed.
  • Interpret and enforce library policy in situations relevant to the position, with tact and aplomb.
  • Provide excellent customer service under all circumstances.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of programming for all ages and other special events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum requirements:

  • Open to New Jersey residents only.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Excellent customer service and teamwork skills.
  • Able to operate a computer, library software, a web browser, and an e-mail interface.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Fluency in English.
  • Ability to follow directions and procedures with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working with the public and with people of all ages.
  • Able to bend, stoop, reach, lift, stand, and ambulate, as needed, as relevant to the position. Daily tasks require lifting, carrying, moving, and manipulating books and other library material as well as pushing a loaded cart full of books. *
  • Occasional travel to meetings or training outside of the library.
  • Creativity, flexibility, and a sense of humor.

Schedule:

Position # 1:        4 hours per week (Sundays).  Occasional additional hours possible.

Position # 2:       18 hours per week (Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays).  Mon & Tues day shift.    Occasional additional hours possible.

Title:  Ranked at Library Assistant by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission.

Compensation:  $21.93 per hour.

This position is represented by the Communications Workers of America Local 1031, AFL-CIO and is ranked at the position of Library Assistant by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission. Starting salary is based on CWA contract and exceeds the NJLA recommended minimum.

Start Date:  Anticipated start date in June-July 2023.

The first 90 days of employment are provisional.
