Teen Volunteer Opportunities

Give back to your library by volunteering!
Here are a few ways you can help:
In-Person Volunteering
  • Assist with programs & crafts
  • Propose new teen programming
  • Help keep shelves in order
  • Assist with various other in-house tasks

The application period is for 2 weeks, or until positions are filled.

Volunteer Orientation will be on one of the following three dates— you must be able to attend one of them to become a volunteer:

  • Aug 30: 3:30-4:30pm
  • Sept 7: 11am-12pm
  • Sept 20: 3:30-4:30pm

Virtual Read-and-Review
  • Write reviews of books, graphic novels or movies
  • Limit of 2 reviews per month

Overview

  • Volunteer opportunities are open to Millburn-Short Hills residents who are in 7th-12th grade.
  • For virtual (Read & Review) opportunities:
    • There is a limit of 2 review submissions per month
    • Books must be on the student’s reading level, preferably from the Library’s Middle Grade or Young Adult collections.
    • Every 100 pages = 1 volunteer hour + 1 hour for writing the review itself.
  • For in-person volunteering:
    • All in-person volunteers are eligible to work 1 hour per week/20 hours total during a school year. If you are not scheduled immediately, you will be emailed when one of your chosen timeslots becomes available.
    • The schedule of volunteer hours is dependent upon the availability of work needs and supervisory and training time available.
    • All in-person volunteers are required to complete Orientation and sign a copy of the Volunteer Code of Conduct prior to starting work (parental signature required for grades 7 and 8).

Volunteer Code of Conduct

  1. As representatives of the Library, following Orientation, volunteers are expected to be respectful and courteous while both volunteering and using the library. Volunteers will accept the directions of their supervisor.
  2. Volunteers must keep cell phones and devices silent and out of sight during their work assignment, may not eat on the job, and must keep personal conversations brief and appropriate for a business environment.
  3. Volunteers sign up for specific dates and times so that the library staff knows when to expect them and can plan adequate coverage for programs and ongoing tasks. Volunteers will follow a fixed schedule unless otherwise noted or agreed. Switching shifts is not allowed.
  4. With the exception of emergencies, notice of absence must be provided at least one day prior to scheduled time by either email (janis.werner@millburn.bccls.org) or phone (973-376-1006, ext. 114). If a volunteer fails to report absence for 2 consecutive weeks, they will be notified of their removal from the schedule, pending explanation.
  5. Volunteers agree that the library may at any time— for whatever reason— terminate the volunteer’s relationship with the library, or make changes in the nature of their assignment.
