  • Oct. 6 | Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams (moderated by Michelle Brubaker) | Register
    • In The Dictionary of Lost Words, novelist Pip Williams spins an intriguing alternate history of the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary. The protagonist is Esme Nicoll, daughter of one of the lexicographers, who worked for decades in the Scriptorium to fashion the OED. As a child, Esme spends her days underneath her father’s desk inside the Scriptorium, learning how words are chosen and given meaning through the authority of print. One day, a slip falls from a Scriptorium desk and lands in Esme’s lap. Believing it to be discarded, Esme pockets the slip and stores it in a wooden chest. As she grows, Esme continues to collect words and slowly observes how words used by women and poor people are often excluded from print, an absence she works to rectify. Inspired by actual events, Williams delved into the archives of the Oxford English Dictionary to tell this original story and offers a celebration of words and the power of language to shape the world.

Seed Library

Let’s grow together!

The Friends are proud to announce the launch of our Little Free Native Seed Library located inside the Glen Avenue entrance of the Millburn Library.

Pick up a packet or two to plant at home and start your own native pollinator garden. The seeds have been harvested from local sources and are free. Packets are labeled with planting instructions.

Working together, we can help the environment and grow closer as a community.
